Five Star Fridays: Blogging the Best of the week in Design
Feb 19th
I have been thinking about a way to pay it forward to my readers with some great blog posts I want to share. The goal is to make it easy to read and link to them and give you a thumbnail sketch about the content. If you run across any you particularly like, please send to me for the next week. So, here you go! Please give me your feedback! I am a work in progress!
Brave new world House Tour: Apartment Therapy
I stumbled across this redo and just really liked the colors and the feel of the room. The orange makes me swoon, especially when set against the fabulous graystone color on the walls.
PlushPalate: A charming litle place
This is a site that always has incredible photographs. I love little spaces. I guess it is because I live in a little space and am always striving to find the right balance of layers. I love layers in a home. Not clutter, but layers. Especially in cooler months…just like clothing. It is comforting and warm. In the summer months, perhaps you peel away some of the layers for a fresh look. In this post, I really like the way the rooms are pulled together.
Paula Grace’s posts are always informative and she does a fabulous job of educating the reader on design concepts. I love this post because it highlights why it is so important to consider the function and purpose of a room when contemplating the design. Like Paula, I favor round tables in dining rooms so that conversation is facilitated. There are some gorgeous photos here.
Colour me happy: When is white just right?
This is a great blog find! I chose her post because it ties into one of mine I wrote recently; The Bright of White and I love exploring really great design using whites and neutrals. There are gorgeous photographs here!
Tobi Fairley blog: Things I love: Pink Rooms
I just had to add this post because I could not help but fall in love with all the pink rooms! Just too delectable and I am not even a “pink” person! Tobi has all sorts of great posts and I like her style!
The Bright…of White
Feb 3rd
It is no secret around our shop that I have a “thing” for white lately. (and grays too but that is for another day and post) I want to do my own bathroom redo in white on white. Now, I know about little dark things showing up on a white floor. Like hairs. And dirt.
But when you consider this sort of impact, who cares?
Of course, it is not for everyone nor every place but I think that white can be an incredibly bright and rich look. Think white with layers of texture. That is what most of these rooms have in common. I favor modern design but in these photos it is the textural layering of whites that makes the rooms work. White on white in a modern setting sometimes gets to be “too” sleek.
Admittedly, there is one area I don’t favor white. Ceilings. I prefer a painted ceiling….but not white…a strking color on the ceiling could set some serious drama into action! ( I am just woozy with the thought of a BM Branchport Brown ceiling and all white walls, floors and furnishings)
If you get cold feet at the thought of all that drama then use a white that is not “deocrator white” or worse, “ceiling white” but a white tinged with a hue that gives a nod to the contrast of the white room. Subtle, but definitive.

Truth or Dare:
To me, this is white not done right. Busy Busy Busy. Apparently they did not read post from a few weeks ago about just saying no to 4×4 tumbled marble either.
A round island could be an interesting element but I have only seen Johnny Grey do round islands and make them work. This one does not work.
And the little cubby hole created by the appliance garage sitting on the counter and the “too too” skinny columns on range hood is at BEST wasted counter space, at WORST, really unattractive. This is about execution. Poorly done.
Note the crown and how the ins and outs are visually tough to watch…at least for me. I want to just shake some sense into someone. Heavy sigh.
White Beach Kitchen soft and serene
Feb 18th
White kitchens are never going to fade out of view. They are crisp, clean and provide unlimited possibilities. The trick is making them look fresh and not dated. In this kitchen, note the more modern “sticks” for backsplash tile and the modern handles. These design elements add the edge to an all white beach kitchen.

Gray blue stone "sticks" are something different and edgy in this othewise traditional beach kitchen

Soft and Serene

Lots of pantry storage in this kitchen
